The calico museum of textiles is one of the world's most beautiful collection of rare, antique and even modern Indian textiles. The museum was established in 1949 by the businessperson Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira Sarabhai. Ahmedabad since that time had a flourishing textile industry. The museum was formerly housed at the Calico Mills in the heart of the textile commerce. But as soon as the collection increases the museum was relocated to the Sarabhai House in Shahibaug in 1983.
Starting days textiles were collected with a vision to conserve, built awareness and empower the vast and deep textile heritage of India. Over the years the collection has developed into an outstanding repository of fabrics based on pattern, colors, weave, and embellishment and has become a known center providing Indian and international scholars an hope to study and draw in-depth knowledge on this exceptional range of Indian ethos. The Museum was inspired by Dr. Ananda Coomaraswamy. The founder of this inspiring museum Sarabhai foundation was started in 1959 by Shri Ambalal Sarabhai and Smt. Sarladevi Sarabhai, is a non-profit devoted, among other things, to the ‘encouragement of science, art, and literature.’
